Subject: Announcement of Fusion Research Symposium
NEWSGROUP FOR PLASMA SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY
Announcement of the First International Symposium on Evaluation of Current
Trends in Fusion Research, Washington, DC November 14-18 1994.
Dear Colleagues;
I want to bring to your attention the above
symposium on fusion. Its goal is to
compare all the
various fusion schemes that have been proposed in
the past, and it will focus on the practical
applications of fusion energy. Invited
speakers will
represent the different projects. At the
end of the
symposium, a set of recommendations will be issued by
a panel of experts on how to maintain the level of
investment and at the same time look at all the best
options.
The idea behind this effort is to place fusion in a
broad interdisciplinary setting, as an innovative new
technology that helps us in space, semiconductors, and
waste disposal. Fusion is an integral
part of a whole
range of things that are of significant importance in
the national interest. Our aim is to
establish these
connections which were overlooked in the past.

1st INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON EVALUATION OF
CURRENT TRENDS IN FUSION RESEARCH,
International Advisory Board: B. Coppi, G. Miley,
H. Persson, R. Post, L. Shenggang,
E. Teller,
G. Velarde, C. Yamanaka, M. Yoshikawa
Here is a brief summary of the symposium`s objectives
and plan:
1. One-hour presentations of all the major and minor
fusion schemes, by invited speakers proposing each
scheme, with equal time accorded to each.
There is no
weighting according to level of funded support.
2. The objective is to present the achievements
obtained so far by the various approaches to fusion:
energy production in terms of soundness of approach,
estimated effort to reach scientific demonstration
of fusion, feasibility of commercial development,
possible industrial applications, and estimated effort
to develop a prototype reactor.
3. To assess the achievements, scientific and
technical, of the various approaches, and especially
novel approaches to fusion energy production.
4. A panel of experts will issue recommendations on
the direction of future research on fusion.
This
report will be communicated to the funding agencies
which support fusion.

Anyone who wishes to participate may contact the
chair of the Steering Committee directly and request
an invitation. I believe that keynote
speakers have
been invited, and all interested persons are welcome
to participate as observers. The latter
will be
expected to address questions to the speakers, and to
raise points of relevance.
