i did some experiments on polymer modification
using different techniques.
They all depend on chemical surface
modifications. Corona treatment mainly
causes a oxidation of the surface
groups, incorporating oxygen. The corona
disharge generates reactive radicals
and ions from air. This treatment
increases polarity and enhances
wettability for glueing.
For examination, XPS would be the best, as
it is very surface sensitive and
shows differneces in chemical bonds. XRD
is useless in this application,
it's used to examine crystallographic
properties. IR spectroscopy is also
difficult, as it is not that surface
sensitive, except under special
conditions (ATR). AFM can also give
valuable results when used in lateral
force mode to show chemical changes
at the surface, causing different
tip-sample interactions. Another easy
experiment is the sessile drop test to
see the effects of surface
modification.
for discharging, you could try a grounded carbon fiber
brush, as it is used
to clean grammophone records.
