Subject: Crisp landmarks/partitions/transitions

Hello,

We often encounter thresholds, transition points, landmark values for

quantitative dimensions. For example, boiling point, ignition

temperature, poverty line. Sometimes we might name the intervals

instead of the transition points, e.g., laminar and turbulent flow,

lower and middle class, etc.

I am interested in compiling a list of such interesting points and

regions on quantitative dimensions across domains. I also welcome

discussion about the nature of these transitions -- do you think these

points are crisp or fuzzy?

So, for your domain of expertise, what are interesting and

scientifically known or rules of thumb ideas about what points are

important on any quantitative dimension that you care about. How and

why does it work? Why is that point special/useful?

Thanks a lot,

Paritosh.

P.S. I understand that the question might not be clear, so please ask

me and I would be willing to clarify. Thanks.
